Singapore Discovery Centre

It had been quite an uneventful week despite the school hols. I had
just started on a new job and couldn't find the time to make a getaway. Also since the checkpoints would be quite a challenge given the heightened security checks taking place over the escaped fugitive.

In an attempt to make up, I asked my girl where she would like to go and the wish was to visit Singapore Discovery Centre. I was last here like more than 5 years ago, and coming here again would make quite an interesting afternoon.

So, we arrived there at the early afternoon. First to greet me was an inviting pond of sorts and naturally, I started having fishful thoughts. However, the bubble was burst when I saw no fishing signs all over. Darn.

*Grumble grumble*

We were there to touch the future

What were they looking at?

Getting the tickets, it was a challenging affair to figure out what kind of package to get. There was this $28 package which included an iWerks movie, and another $45 package which included the movie as well as the 3D shark show. And they were to be viewed at a certain fixed time. Therefore scheduling the whole tour would require some precise planning. I just wanted to take a leisurely stroll and opted for the $28 package.

We were there all right

Control station

I was rather pleasantly surprised at the quality of the interactive booths. In my opinion, all were very well done. Lots of thought had gone into making the visit a very interesting one.

Can't I have one for xmas?

We even saw some robotic project by NTU students providing some dancing entertainment. There was also an impressive robot that could speak to you, and rather naturally. Ask him where his mother, and the reply was "in planet Z". Wow. Ask him if he stupid, he said, "no, I am not stupid". Now, that was one smarty pants robot.

Mt Everest

We wrapped up the visit with the iWerks show about Mount Everest. It was kind of like Omnimax theatre, except that the screen was flat instead of the rounded dome. It was quite an insight into the attempts to climb the highest peak in the world. Very inspiring.

Not a bad afternoon out. Definitely worth a $28 visit.
