Air Force Museum
Air Force Museum
An ususual place right smack in the middle of the country. This used to be the old Singapore Paya Lebar Airport, but was taken over by the military after it's move to Changi. I have never heard of this Air Force Museum and only found it by some aimless driving around the area. At first I had accidentally driven into military ground seeing some sentry posts around. But it was not occupied and no one was stopping me. I hit a dead end at the end of the road but on the u-turn back, I saw the sign saying that it was open on Sunday. I turned it and saw that it was a public area, and that there were some visitors (mostly ang mohs) walking around.
Which better? My car or the aeroplane
We came in this
Where to get my luggage?
I am going to build this for my science project
Got shopping here
It looked interesting enough for me to come down from the car to check the place out. True enough, it was an Air Force museum with some exhibits of some disused planes and helicopters. There was even an exhibit of a Missile launcher, not an everyday sight.
Go up must take aeroplane
Two zombies from outer space
So cool, like computer game
This used to be POSB bank book
Low tech office in the early days
Hmm, let's see which of these buttons will launch the missile
F16 cockpit
On the second floor, there was an air-conditioned area with more exhibition style things to see and read, and buttons to press. Not too bad for a smallish museum. It mostly traced how the RAF (known at that time) progressed with time and became what it is today. Our air defence is no play play matter.
1983 Cable car incident
Close up of the rescue heli
Of interest was also the account on how the RAF help to rescue the people during the 1983 cable car incident in which a barge carrying a high oi rig structure hit the top of the cables of the cable car ride. Some 7 people died during that event, but some were rescued heroically by the air force.
